Shrub or small tree to about 4m, it is found in litoral and subtropical rainforests of northern NSW and southern Queensland.  It is a slow growing plant with stunning maroon new growth, well suited to semi shaded area or pot culture it can be grown indoors. It is the food plant for the grubs of the rainforest regent skipper butterfly Euschemon rafflesia.
