Blueberry - Sunshine Blue

Serendipity's Edible Fruits
Update: 1474 days 7hrs

Comments: -

In heavy flower July. Pollination rate a little low, hoping native bees discover the new blueberry patch soon. ants seem to be doing most pollination so far. Only first year amazed at flowering & fruiting considering a mild winter

Year 2.

I have most varieties of blueberries that Daleys stock. This one seems to be best suited to Brisbane conditions, the smaller leaves means it handles the summer extremes better. The fruit is not as flavourful as some other varieties, but it is of good size and not too bad, may seem a little gritty but still is 10 times better than the soggy punnet blueberries from the supermarket.
It has nice compact shape, though can still reach to 1.5 metres high, and gets covered in pinkish lantern flowers. Having about an 80% pollination rate this year, which is 4 times better than year 1, could be higher if I can stop the August winds from blowing some of the flowers away, (I think the wind may be helping some pollination too.)

Fruiting Months September, October, November

Planted: 2009

Height 1.5 metres

Growing: In the Ground

Qty: 3

First Fruited: 1 Months from Purchase in Pot

Sun/Shade: Full Sun

Pollination: Self Pollination

Comments: - 2011: I love this variety because it is an ever-green and suited to pot growing. It gives loads of fruits and is so easy to grow in Melbourne climates. I purchased a few small plants this year and had some potted up and some in the ground. So far they are all doing great. I have removed the flowers off all of the plants as they show up except for one plant.

2012: The plants has doubled in size and produced loads of flowers! I checked the flower buds today, almost all the flowers has been germinated so finger cross I will get a bumper of a crop this year.

Compact and pretty flowers.  I hear they are not as fussy about their soil type as other blueberries that only tolerate acidic soils.

It's still young so I'm only feeding it for green growth rather than flower support for the first two years.

Planted two Sunshine Blue and one Elliot Blueberry seedlings into the East facing front lawn. (Morning sun and to about 2pm)Hope to create an informal hedge as they grow.  (Elliot is a pollinator)

Have used pine nettles and shreded sugar cane as mulsh and to acidify the soil slightly.  Also have planted broad bean plants around them to use as green fertiliser later.  Have a dripper system under the mulch which is timed for every second day for a half hour feed.

Will remove any fruit in first two years to encourage growth.  Seem to be growing slowly as yet.

This is a Nellie Kelly blueberry - I adore these plants. I allowed them to fruit in the first year, and they gave a couple of punnets of blueberries in total between the two.

Make sure you let the berries atay on the bush for a week or so after turning blue - they are still sour when they forst turn, but lovely and sweet if you give them time.

Fruiting Months January, November, December

Planted: 2011

Height 30 Centimetres

Growing: In a Pot

Qty: 2

Fruit Harvest: 0.2 kilograms per Year

First Fruited: 11 Months from Purchase in Pot

Sun/Shade: Medium Sun

Pollination: No

Fertiliser or Organics Used: Dynamic lifter for fruit

Pest Control: Multiguard slug pellets. Slugs are the only pest I have found on these lovely plants.

Organic Status:Organic

Question: How to prune this after fruiting? To a roundish shape, or should I be selective with the growth I prune?

Planted in 2008 but I really haven't given them any attention.  All the same they have provided me with some fruit which I simply graze on.  Will put more effort into them this year to see what they can do.

Lots of new growth so it will be interesting how they go next fruiting season.
