Aleurites Moluccanna - Weight Loss?

    27 responses

Rowee starts with ...
Has anybody heard of a company in Sydney called "Latin Seed" that's marketing a weight loss product imported from the Aleurites Moluccanna plant in South America?

What's so special with the South American plant compared with Qld plants?

And is Aleurites Moluccanna known as a weight loss ingredient?

Appreciate your reply.

Hi Amanda,
Kemiri, as they're known in Indonesia, are used as a thickener in spice pastes (eg Rendang) and the pastes are usually fried in oil before then using in cooking.
I seem to recall that in preparing the candlenuts before shelling, they are boiled? then dried for storage....I'll have to look into it.
So if they're boiled pefore shelling, thats like cooking three times

They're also used in some Pacific Islands for food, but only as a condoment there too.
maybe toasted and mixed with salt...dont quite remember...

As far as I'm aware, they're not used large quantities or as an 'eating' nut like peanut or cashew .

That having been said there could be some genetic varients that may be ok.
I wouldn't go testing too much, rather , I'd rely on Trad. knowledge and go from there.

As an example, a friend of mine was in Mexico about 20yrs ago,
staying with some locals and was fed some seeds of Jatropha sp. (J.curcas?) with no ill effect.
J.curcas has a rep for being a violent purgative, but this stain/cultivar or whatever seemed OK.

Candle nuts toasted and ground to a paste make a nice body scrub
after a dip in shower massaged and rubbed in then rinsed off.
When used like that it removes all sorts of grease and dirt also.
A treat for your skin

Ta Speedy - there is a fish u can buy called "Butter fish" (espec QLD) that my flatmate once ate/stole out of the fridge in the middle of the night without treating first - it's the worst kind of diarrhoea you can imagine - so oily (apparently!) that you don't even feel it coming out!
He kept pooing his pants at work - ah karma!

Anyway - thanks for the tip on candlenuts - I was utterly ignorant of their powerful 'medicine' :-))

The power of suggestion is very strong for some. If you are lucky enough not to be well informed and (nearly always rightly) pessimistic about alot of these things, your brain can trick you into getting results. Usually this is helped by a combination of other lifestyle factors that you change as part of the diet or regime, but if you believe its working and you are seeing good results, good for you - keep doing whatever it is you think is helping.

Forget the magnetic pillows, I want a crystal ceiling fan to get rid of the RSI in my shoulder!

i havent changed anything in my diet or lifestyle, i have always been fairly healthy BJ and if what it takes is to believe then i....Believe :) Im sure you have tried something in your life just because a friend or family member has suggested it to you. Its partly how we learn about new things.
Virginny, i dont think its necessary to be so sarcastic. I thought these blogs were for us to give our opinion. I have taken all of the above on board but at the end of the day, im so so happy i gave it a go. its changed my life for the better.

I have to agree with Mez, I too have had great results using the latin seed. i also tried locally bought candlenut before using the latin seed version for some 6 months. There is absolutely a difference and i find it personally offensive the tone of some of the replies here. The medicinal value of some plant varieties are well documented and also the fact that where and how plants are grown can have an affect on how they taste etc.. just look at the changes in fruit based on environment(rainfall etc) look at coffee or wine grape as examples.. is it such a stretch that this could also extend to medicinal benefits.... seriously maybe think a little before putting something down in future

I’m no expert – but some plant products can lift the metabolic rate (chilli, caffeine etc). However most that are really effective, such as ephedra, are illegal because abuse of such is so dangerous.
Personally I don’t believe in using a food product or medicine to assist with weight loss. I am fortunate enough to be healthy I opt for portion control and exercise to maintain health – the whole calories in matching calories out sort of thing. I’d rather avoid the dangers of things that play with my metabolic rate. Just because it is from a plant or organic does not make it safe. As I’ve said – it is personal choice. I want to understand the chemicals I put in my head be they from a plant or physician.
Candle nuts do contain saponin (which is a toxicant), and some saponin may get your heart pumping and suppress appetite – but too much can kill you. There is a reason why the chomping down on foxglove is not recommended.
Frankly I’d doubt that the quantum of saponin or the type in candle nut was significant as the potential toxic effects would deter approval for its sale by the Australian and New Zealand Food Regulators. If the ranges of saponin in sugar beet are anything to go by then yes, the terroir does have a mild impact but given the quantum of toxicants allowed in food that is sold in Australia I don’t think the range would really allow toxins of a level to make a significant difference.

But if you’re getting results from the placebo effect or otherwise – then it is working for you.

your right - it's far healthier to put chemicals into our bodies, like all the pesticides and fertilisers i guess you use. I guess you guys believe the latest cancel drug in testing - from a plant must be crap too.. people are getting great reults and helping their health. The latin seed people - whatever you think are helping change peoples lives for the positive-are any of you able to say that?

Arsenic is an element
not organic, natural but not organic

DDT is organic
The term 'organic' used in marketing is a bastardization of its true meaning
Organic refers to carbon based chemistry, so all your VOC's, pesticides, plastics etc are all organic

also the Candenut is in no way related to the macadamia
Candle nut is Euphorbiaceae - related to Cassava and Spurges
Macadamia is Proteaceae - related to grevillea, Banksia and Protea

they just look superficially similar

as for fatty things heliping people lose weight
that actually holds water
A lot of what youve been told about the way fats work in the body is being turned on its head
dietary reccomendations have been propagated without the basic science being done for decades
I guess physicians saw fat and though fat makes fat - so simple.
FAIL!

Its a shame so many people are trying to make a quick buck out of it all that it clogs the net with info-crud

but essentailly many nut oils (walnut) and palm oils like Coconut, Palm oil (the orange fruit oil not the hard kernel oil), as well as fruit oils (Avocado, olive) and legumes (peanut)
have high levels of monounsaturated fats with some saturated and polyunsaturated

despite being saturated many of the saturated nut oils act in the body like unsaturated fats and improve cardiovascular health
Inb fact people on low saturated fat diets had a drop in HDL cholesterol which is really bad, worse than having elevated LDL.

anyway long story short, yes its feasible. But all i see is testimonials here - thats anecdotal evidence.
Thatd be fine if it didnt involve a potentially toxic food

i know people are desperate to lose weight, but theres been people die from herbal cures before
In taiwan? women crash dieting with sweetleaf juice (Sauropus androgynus)
caused destruction of the lungs due to high papaverine content.

I always liked Dr Rudys advice on weight loss

Yes, bring back Dr Rudy from Seth Effrica. Another very helpful product I've heard about is a jar of 1,000 tablets that you don't actually take but scatter on the ground and pick up each day.

Haha.

It makes me wonder
Ive been watching that supersizers on ?sbs? on thursday nights

they test emselves prior to spending a week on a historical diet and lifetyle

usually it involves eating very 'badly' and drinking an awful lot more than is reccomended
suprisingly sometimes they are in better shape than when they started

The 70s one was interesting. People apparently ate more energy than they do on average today

but they also did more

walk to the shops
walk to work
walk up and down stairs
go out dancing, or just go out in general
even office work would have involved more up down around and through rushing about with files and making manual facsimiles
Kids of course were outside playing

now everyone is sitting on their bums all the time
at work, and at home
and our entertainmnet for the whole family comes from the net or the TV

but the problem is, where is there to go? even if you wanted to?
This country is just too damn expensive, it cheaper to stay home.
Contrast that to a place like Maslaysia and Japan- where its cheaper to go out!

Hi All

I’m a journalism student and would like to do an article on The Latin Seed. Is anyone that has taken the Latin Seed interested in being interviewed for this article? It should only take around 5 minutes.

I’d be interested in knowing your experiences with Latin Seed and how you feel about it now that it has been revealed to be something other than what was advertised.

If anyone, posters or readers, would like to talk to me, please email me at michelleman2011@hotmail.com

I would really appreciate any comments you have to make. My deadline is 10am Thursday 21 April – so a quick reply would be great!

Cheers
Michelle
