And today's weather is?

    18 responses

Wayne starts with ...
Overcast with rain periods breaking to showers 17c to 27c is the forecast. We have had good rain over the past three days, about 100mm.

I'm pleased not to be living way down south this weekend -- 40c plus is not to my liking, take care you guys.

Hi - what is the actual difference between the the Severe fire warning and the new Catastrophic one anyway?
Have we run out of superlatives or is there a basis for it? Is it to do with fuel loads or such?

As far as I am aware. Its based purely on weather conditions. Very Hot and Windy, catastophic means the fire depts assume if a fire starts it will be uncontrollable. Hence if it starts near property etc it will all be lost rapidly. Hence if your area is declared catastrophic they are basically saying have your fire action plan ready and preffereably leave the catastrophic zones to somewhere safer before a fire is even reported.
As you wont be able to stop/protect your property if a fire does start.

That said it all just Extra Cautious PR Stuff because the fire depts all got their arses handed to them in the public enquirey over east. Basically now they can say we told you you would die and to leave your properties, responsibility absolved.

It's hot up here today, must be around 27C, no problems with fires, everything's to green to burn, lawn needs mowing twice a week, trees are growing that fast that you can hear them stretching out.

It's all good living in the tropics.

Nearly 1030pm still 35 degrees here...I am having a "live in Tassie day" 2day.... I can't tell the diff' between a severe/extreme/catastrophic fire warning myself. My fire break is double the normal width and i have inner and outer perimeter ones - they are not going to do anything in this wind.

Wow Linton, some of that cold must have travelled up here; it was still 6º at 8am this morning. Crazy as it was 25º here a couple of days ago.

Mary, are your figs waking up? Mine have started to show a light green tinge in the tips but I don't know how they will react to last night's cold.

Yes, Symiot, all figs are waking up either swelling with buds, buds greening or in leaf. Strangely my two air-layered Black Genoa never lost their leaves. Also a truncheon that I chopped off the mother Black Genoa and stuck in a pile of dirt ON the ground (not buried) is also sprouting. Figs are so easy!!

I think your photo is from just around the corner from my house Linton. Looks like it's near the turn off to the Raspberry farm :)

Snow doesn't worry me much these days, but last nights frost was ridiculous. The photo is from our pond. That ice is about 1.5 cm thick! And that was at 9.30 am, so the sun had been on it for a while.

I'll be interested to see how things cope. So far, white sapote has burned tips but looks OK after the first couple of inches. It doesn't look like it's effected the citrus (even cold sensitive ones like citrons), strawberry gauvas, or my avacado, all out in the open. Didn't have time to check everything, and they may look a bit sadder in a few weeks...
