BenW starts with ... I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion on a climbing plant I can grow across the top of my espalier that won't try and take over? I don't want loads of long sideshoots to continually hack off (so grapes and actinidia are out), though a few sprays of fruit or flowers are a win. If it's edible, all the better but not essential... For context, that's about 2.8m tall, 7m wide and the top gap about 30cm. I want to keep the top gap clear(ish). Any ideas appreciated :)

BenW says... @ Julie All I'm really trying to achieve is a softening of the treated pine frame. I'm hoping something well behaved won't shade the espaliered apples much. Not such a big deal if it does a little bit though. I have 60 apple trees in my paddock, so there shouldn't be a shortage :D Those are at the back of my vegi garden, where I have a few espaliers, stepovers, a little Belgian fence and some minarets for a bit of fun. @ sternus, for some reason I was stuck on perennials, but on the fence behind the espalier I have a loganberry (needs tying up still). and in the yard behind that is a thornless blackberry that throws 6 or 7 meter long canes every year. BenW says... Hey tommoz. I have a issai and a couple of other arguta and they are a bit easier to manage than their cousins, the issai especially. I did have a male kolomicta but I managed to kill it. I couldn't find a female kolomicta or seeds though, so seeds are interesting. I'm not sure I have anything you'd want in trade but i'm happy to pay a fair price ☺ I do have A. Pilosula but it would take me a year or 2 to get a good layer. Tommoz says... Female kolomikta does not exist in Australia, and they didn't bother with it because the male is ornamental. You can be one of the first to try with seeds. Email me your address and I'll send you the rest of my seeds which is only about 7 so no big deal. Tradewinds should have them again in the future. In Finland there is a self fertile kolomikta called Annikki. It would be great to get male and a female. Self fertile might be a bit much to ask from 7 seeds, but who knows? :) I've thought about importing some of the actinidia, as there are some interesting wild species out there. BTW,I saw this today, which you may be interested in: http://www.lubera.co.uk/plants/soft-fruit/new-soft-fruit/fourberries/fourberry-orangesse It's a selection or Ribes Aureum which actually has orange fruit, rather than black, and supposedly a mango taste. BenW says... I think I had about 700 chill hours last week Tommoz... Seriously though, I'm not actually sure how many hours I get. I'm yet to find something I don't get enough chill for, so it isn't really something I worry about. I even get a good crop from the notoriously shy jostaberry.
