Apricot tree training

    4 responses

Hi,

I have purchased a new apricot tree that has the current shape of a central leader system.

I'm a little confused as to whether it should be trained as an open vase or modified central leader as I've read it can be both.

Should i trim back the leader to have it as open vase or leave as central leader?

You do seem to know what your doing anyway - your tying to a good shape already - I personally keep central leader and trim all branches back to from Half to a third off to a just above good down bud - next Jan - Feb summer prune to just below a bud which forces fruiting spurs/buds next winter. Read lots too and maybe try doing an espalier grafting lots with different ripening times - ive done a few on apples and pears with types not available from shops - maybe you can find a local heritage fruit society like we have at werribee park.

open vase typically gives a lower yet wider tree, central leader gives a taller more narrow tree.

So its personal preference depending on the space available.

Adfx - take a look at this site - http://www.werribeeparkheritageorchard.org.au/news-and-events/
then check the freebies section - lots there including grafting - not just for you but all on Forum to check out - even grafting with mud/clay etc from centuries ago age old techniques - I found it facinating - i even used wedge techniques on white sapotes today - Im sure will take :)

Thanks guys, indeed i have been reading and study in what i need to do it was just the center leader or open vase for apricot that i was confused with coz some say either one. I guess i will stick to center leader style as i have a small courtyard backyard setup and due to it being in a pot

Will check out that link also, cheers
