Hi Jason and other cool climate avocado growers. My small avocado tree, which has been doing well has three branches with black die back. Should i remove these before it spreads and why would this have happened. It has been well protected from frost over winter and not over watered. the tree also has healthy growth. Thanks Karen Portland Vic.

Your plant looks Ok - the dieback is from those cold mornings we had maybe - if you trim an Avo it tends to die back to the next lowest node anyway - when flowering they lose leaves to supply protein but new leaves grow back soon after - Bacon leaves (B) go yellow and drop off - lamb hass(A) are green when the fall - Post some pics end of november

Hello Avocado helpers
Not convinced all is going well. The die back is continuing toward the main trunk. The birds didn't help while I was away either as they scratched away the dirt at the base exposing some fragile roots. Hmm. Jason you are still welcome to visit.

I wonder if it has Phytophthora dieback? Only help for that is to spray the leaves (if any) with phosacid, or Yates Antirot.

Agree with JohnMc1 Karen54, spray with Yates AntiRot asap! You might just save it.

Thanks for your help. Should I trim the branch with die back back to where the branch is green or leave it alone. Cheers Karen

Yes Karen54, trim back all the dead wood, then spray it with Steri-prune or apply some water based paint.

Hello Brendan and other helpers, update on the failing Eldranol. Despite spraying with anti-rot and trimming black withered branches it is still struggling and one by one the branches are turning black. Not looking good!!
My other tree which is looking strong is increasingly getting the pale colour between green veins. In an avocado would you treat for iron deficiency or zinc and Magnesium? Thanks

Looks like an iron & manganese deficiency Karen.
Could you post a photo of your sick Edranol tree? Does sound like Phytophthora root rot :-( And you did spray it (and the soil) with anti-rot? Is the tree too wet?
Try giving it some gypsum, 4 hand-fulls per sq m, and just a small drink to water it in.
