Avocado pruning advice

    2 responses

Ross starts with ...
I have recently given my Wurtz avocado a heavy prune because of possum damage. It has now started regrowth and I need advice on further trimming the large branches back to new growth and whether to sacrifice shoots that are coming from under the branch. I assume these should be removed because of possible strength issues down the track.

Wow Ross, those possums must have given your tree a hard time!
Usually, it is recommended to only prune/remove the top 1/3 (one third), otherwise, the tree may die. I have killed a 30yo avo tree by heavy pruning!
At the moment, I'd just leave it to recover it's shock, and feed it some Seasol (white bottle).

Thanks Brendan - yes possum scent trails resulted in the top half of branches to completely rot away not to mention leaves being decimated.
I have now resorted to netting.
