What is the best avocado? That's is depending on different criteria for choosing the best avos, and subjective to individual.
If your question is what varieties are likely to grow and fruit in WA then that is simpler to answer.
I live in melb and grow bacon and wurtz. They are doing great in the garden at the moment. I think others have been successful grown reed, lamb hass...(which are more cold sensitive) but of course bacon is the safer bet.

My Bacons are almost ripe :). Although it does taste good in cool climates it doesn't crop well in cool climates

Reed and Hass are far better performers for me. I use Ettinger as a pollinator for those but Bacon can pollinate also. Ettenger basically never fruits in cool climates but it's the best pollinator for the later type A's. Unless you are inland you don't need worry about cold damage anywhere in Australia with any commercial variety. I live in the coldest place on the costal mainland and there hasn't been a hardcore frost on the coast since the 1960s... It's just not likely to happen anymore.

What sort of minimums do you get Jason?

Usually we only get -3 here, even though it is elevated. This year we got a 1 in 20 year temp of about -5, so there is significant damage to things that are normally OK.

The trusty ol' Bacon didn't mind though :)

I've had trouble establishing reed and hass, however I think that was due to water rather than cold.

Ben, we saw minus 2c this year at the garden which is the coldest it's been in maybe 10 years. It can't get any colder than that because the ocean is within 5km and only 80 metres elevation. I live some 25km North of the ocean and got closer to minus 5 here. Even still my potted stuff including very small avocados are OK.

Summer time is where all my damage happens. The average day in summer is only about 22c so when you get the North wind and it goes from 22 to 45c overnight nothing is adapted to it and you're in trouble.
