Avocados

Peter Hickman starts with ...
I want to grow an Avocado in a pot. If I need A and B types, it will be 2 pots. We do get a few frosts, but several neighbours do have successful larger Hass trees. What cultivars should I get and if the suggestion is Wurtz, will I need a Type B?

Hi Peter, Avocados are self fertile and will set fruit with pollination, however they benefit from cross pollination meaning you get more fruit and an extended fruiting season. If you choose the Wurtz a Fuerte is a good pollinator. They are not easy to grow and can be tricky in pots as they are very fussy about moisture and don't like it too dry and will not tolerate it too wet. Make sure you use a good quality potting mix, have perfect drainage and regular moisture. Never use a drip tray where the pot may sit in water.
