JohnMc1 says... My Babaco has been looking sick lately, it was in a 35lit gro-bag with ordinary commercial potting mix. I usually make up my own mix but for one reason or another it was planted straight into ordinary potting mix. If you buy potting mix in bags, add 50/50 course (river)sand to reduce the compaction as the potting mix breaks down. when I removed my poor Babaco from the pot it was sitting in virtually mud. No wonder the roots were rotting off. I have now planted it in a garden bed that is perfectly drained, so it should pick up, but, I'm taking some cuttings as back up. | About the Author JohnMc1 Warnervale NSW 26th August 2014 7:04am #UserID: 2743 Posts: 2043 View All JohnMc1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Boris Spasky says... Drainage is not the same as compaction. Sand will compact. I have used 5 tick potting mixes with small stones. But better still I add pumice to my own mixes. Harder to source, but in NZ it is a standard addition in potting mixes, as they have loads of it over there. Fine crushed scoria may be a second choice substitute. | About the Author Boris Spasky 26th August 2014 8:23pm #UserID: 7085 Posts: 184 View All Boris Spasky's Edible Fruit Trees |
