It'll grow. Might fruit less and be more susceptible to fungal problems though. Size can get huge but should regularly be pruned hard to keep small. Figs take this well as they fruit on the new growth

My Black Genoa is in a pot and under a jacaranda. It is fruiting well but may be healthier if under the sun. I stuck a branch in a pot after I pruned it off and it's now another fig tree.

My young black genoa is attracting a vast array of insects. There are about 30 moths on the branches who sit there all day and have partly transparent wings.

There also are some weird bugs that look like they have gray wool on their back.

Plenty of ants and spiders too.

Which of these is harmful and what should I do?

I spray mine with homemade white oil; 500ml water 1 teaspoon (5ml) vegetable oil and a drop of dishwashing liquid. Shake and spray. Quite harmless; I spray all my citrus with it too and roses when they are attacked by aphids....

P.S. remember the underside of leaves and the stems and trunk.

They're a great fruit for sure, and the best part is that they're productive from a very young age. MaryT, the BG's have been delicious, and have now had a couple of White Adriatics too - very yummy! Have yet to try the Excel, and am highly anticipating it.

VF I had a good look at the cutting grown BG fig and found many emerging figs on a few branches! the ants seems to be most interested in my White Adriatic. None of them are ripe enough yet but one is opened at one end so I picked it anyway and another had a hole in it because the bag was not pulled tight and some bug got in. Sigh.

MaryT, sounds like you have a good spot for the BG - hope you get some nice autumn fruit. The WA has been a later ripening fruit for me too, so shouldn't be long now for you. I've been fortunate so far, no ants, no bugs.

VF I must admit I took out a struggling Camelia at one corner of my garden and it was the only spot available for the BG. It has a high wall (like 10 ft +) to the west, a fence to the south, a two story house to the north and a row of crepe myrtle in front of it to the east so I didn't have high hopes but it does get some morning and midday sun. It's shot up above the fence in a few months and continues to look for light (will probably rise above the wall soon); I just love its spirit. There was little soil; mostly rubble so I had to build a bed with soil (not much; like a foot) and added cow manure. It obviously loves it.

P.S. I forgot: my neighbour was clearing out her fish pond so I took the sludge she wanted to get rid of and dumped it on the fig; maybe that helped.
As you can see from the pics it is in a tight corner. I have no backyard.

Very healthy fig MaryT - looks like it has found the sun it was seeking. That is a very tight spot isn't it, but shows what you can still achieve?!

Yes, VF; tight but it's lucky to have it––the whole property is less than 200 sq m. Not small for inner city though :) Unfortunately the whole length of one side of the property is a shared path so I can't grow anything there :(

Well, it's no wonder you've learnt to do so well with your pots - and I shall never complain to my husband about lack of room again. :)

The Black Genoa is the one that reigns here; I've picked and eaten a couple of White Adriatic now and although they are an improvement on last year; somehow they don't have the same figginess (ok spellcheck; it's not a word) of the BG. Yes, VF; be thankful :)

MaryT - I was wondering that about white adriatic - the tree here is the first one I have had and tasted and I am finding it rather bland..?

I thought it might be from neglect...but perhaps that's just the way it is.. :-(

I agree, Amanda. Bland is a good word to describe the White Adriatic. Disappointing is another. :(

Must correct my previous comment re White Adriatic; it is now producing flavoursome fruit. As for the black Genoa my two trees gave me about a hundred big beautiful figs. I gave away a few cutting grown trees and they are all fruiting. This year I decided to try air layering and found easy success. The pics are of two babies I air layered this year from my two Black Genoa. I definitely prefer this method unless you want to strike a lot of cuttings at once.
