Black Sapote Seedling - Frost ?

    5 responses

Hello,

I have got 2 Black Seedling Sapotes delivered to me today from Daleys.

As always nicely packed & desent plants.

But I am unsure about them, I live in Sydeny NSW 2165, what is the worst frost or temps a Black Sapote can handle ?

Also any tips for the current season through winter in sydney, should I plant them out now, repot them etc ?

Any help much appreciated!

Also, can a Fuyu Persimmon cross pollinate/pollinate with the black Sapote once it flowers in 3-4 years ?

Hi Farouk
I live 15km east of melb city and have a 5yo Mossman (2.2MT) and a 1 year from purchase Bernicker (1mt)both in Pots and get thru Melb winter quite ok as dont get frost as have concrete heat sinks around them - they both have fruit set on them and were very close to each other so hoping for good pollenation? as I had a tiny fruit on mossman for 2 years before I got other sapote - dont think a persimmon will X pollinate - maybe look at White Sapotes too as I have 6 varieties now and handle frost well
cheers, Mark

Mark do you reckon they're worth growing in pots? I potted my bernicker because it wasn't doing well in the ground.

Sternus-
they are pretty slow growing down here but grow faster the bigger they get - tag says pots ok - mine doing well - look like a rubber plant - maybe prettier - so if youve not done great in the ground try a big pot - read they like being flooded maybe during wet season - Mark

Sternus - My Mossman is a grafted plant not a seedling - only fruit ive taken off the other day was a 2 year old non fertile one size of a squash ball - better for you to get a grafted plant from Daleys as dont know yet if this years fruit will grow faster but think they could have been as Bernicker was 1/2meter away - maybe ants are its pollinator? Never had a full size one - arnt you a couple hrs drive from Daleys or Tropical fruit world compared to myself in Melourne?
