Black sapote seeds

    23 responses

Phil@Tyalgum starts with ...
I have a number of black sapote seeds from a particularly large fruited tree growing near Tropical Fruit World (NSW) if anyone would like them. I also have a few canistel seeds from some fruit I picked up there as well. Let me know if you're interested.

No wonder all the black sapotes I've had tasted like mud. I've never waited for them to be quite that rotten :p. I was eating them with still some colour on the skin

Yes have just had a really chocolatey smoothie made with one, just added an egg and a splash of vanilla essence to the milk and sapote. You couldn't tell the difference from the real thing. They need to be squishy, I guess seeing they are a type of persimmon it makes sense.

You've never experienced a chocolate sapote unless you've mixed it with Bailey's. Mindblowing to say the least.

Gus it looks like the black sapote season might be over but will visit TFW again and see if there are still any canistel around. I think they tend to be available 'til Christmas or so.

They come up fine if just planted in the soil but to hurry them and improve the success rate, treat them like lotus seeds.Scrape them on concrete until you see the first hint of pale cotyledon before planting. This works for most hard seeds.

If the air temperature is not high enough, I sow them in proper sterilised seed raising mix on a heat tray. Care to not let them overheat, and nearly all will pop up within a few weeks. When they have one or two true leaves they should be potted up and grown on in a hothouse, or outdoors in hot weather. The seeds should be spaced at about 3cms centers, minimum. When using heat trays the depth of the mix should be no less than 6cms so that the fluctuating temperatures dont kill back roots, that is why the seedlings should be potted up reasonably earlly eough. The first watering should fully saturate , then hold back to watering when it needs to.without being too soggy or too dry. You will soon get the hang of it.

I think they might well be finished for the year unless anyone has some in storage.

I've got 9 on my tree, first season it's fruiting. they're about the size of a medium tomato at the moment. Not sure if they will get all the way to fully ripe but i think they will, tree was a seedling so not sure on variety

Usually from about mid November to about Christmas time, maybe further south a bit later.. I'm not sure how long the seeds remain viable, but someone may have seeds left
