billa starts with ... Hi there, can you please advise me which blue berry would be best suited for inland north east .SA. We have hot summers, winters are reasonably cold, we do get some frosts. Some cherries grown in the region. We are generally alkaline soils, but can acidic soils with gypsum. I'd like to see if i can grow these commercially, starting small first. Tommoz says... "Rabbiteye cultivars as a group, are easier to grow than southern highbush. They are more drought tolerant than southern highbush blueberries and less susceptible to Phytophthora root rot. They also can grow satisfactorily in soils which are lower in organic matter. Rabbit eye blueberries have a stronger root system than highbush blueberries and are more droughts tolerant. Rabbiteye blueberries are more vigorous, longer lived, and easier to care for than most southern highbush varieties. They are not self pollinating and require other varieties for cross-pollination." Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/6138143 Rabbiteyes also don't need as acidic soil as the others. Check out the cultivars at: http://www.abga.com.au/blueberries/variety-descriptions/rabbiteye-varieties Brightwell and Premier are the best I think. Climax is one they didn't list, maybe find out why. Legacy is another really high quality one that is mostly rabbiteye in ancestry. Soil pH sounds like the biggest issue for you. Good luck. | About the Author Tommoz Dural 2nd November 2014 4:26pm #UserID: 7219 Posts: 340 View All Tommoz's Edible Fruit Trees |
