canistel fruit

    10 responses

john starts with ...
Have a 6 year old canistel. Very healthy appearance in well drained soil. Has a lot of very small fruit but they don't appear to be getting bigger. Has been fertilised with trace elements as well as pellet fertiliser and liquid fertiliser. It appears that growth is going into the tree but not into the fruit. Am I doing too much to it. Hope you can help.

Will watch any responses with interest as I have a seedling (? bought from local markets) plant growing in the front yard for the last couple of years.
It's healthy but has put on very little growth. Getting near the point where I'm thinking of removing it.

You are the only person to reply Lissa, so I'd presume that not many people have these trees. We have about 2 tiny fruit now but it will get the chop next year if it doesn't produce. Thanks

It sounds like it's getting too much N before fruit set, plenty of growth but not much fruit. Hold back on the N based ferts till after fruit, chicken pellets ect.

Not a well known fruit tree to grow I think John. I've never even tried the fruit myself. My little tree is not doing anything really - just sitting and looking healthy enough, but sooooo slow. I doing a major revamp of my front garden where it lives and will have to think whether it stays or goes. It would have been good to know other peoples experiences growing this tree. I think I'll post on our Brisbane Local Food group website and see if anyone else knows much about it.

Found a few fruits set on my seedling tree from Limberlost . Fruits appear very round .
It has been planted about 5 years , from a small 15cm pot . Was blown over in Cyclone Yasi 2 years ago and had main leader removed.

Mmmmm, that fruit sure looks delicious. Does the Ross hybridize with regular Canistel I wonder? I've germinated some seeds from a superior tasting round fruit that had very rounded seeds the same as your picture Mike, almost like marbles - I didn't think the fruit was a Ross, as it wasn't flattened on its base,(but no point either), but it had some vertical striping on the skin, and its' flavour different to other canistel I've had since, round or elongated.

VF it is not known to hybridize but they are obviously very close. Some references list them as a variety of canistel. The one is the pic is a bit larger than usual.

Hi Mike Tr..! Not sure if you are still at the email address I posted to - but just wanted to make sure you get this..?! Many thanks for the treasures that you gave me :) The canistel seeds have done well (once I dug them up and scratched up their seed coat - then they germinated at last!) Same with the Asian sweet leaf...have my fingers and toes crossed that I can get them thru their first winter here....
They are in the north facing brick walled garden of the pool area - as warm and humid microclimate as I have - with my bananas and starfruit.

Looking forward to having some of that delicious canistel one day! ;-)
Many thanks again....
