Canistel-Melbourne-Outdoors-Can it Grow&Fruit here?

Just wondering if anyone has any luck growing Canistel around melbourne outdoors? I just picked up the "emma" variety from daleys which is meant to be cold tolerant. I had a big order in place already and thought, why not? But now I'm wondering if it can not only survive our Melbourne weather but actually bear fruit. Any stories with good outcomes?

Wollongong is not quite melbourne but i do get light frosts where i am and the canistel survives. And they are suppose to be fairly tough, drought tolerant trees so it would probably survive your summer. However, Id grow it in a big pot and bring it inside in during the winter and maybe some shade during the middle of summer.

Thanks for the reply. I'm interested in finding out if anyone has gotten it to not only survive but fruit. I've gotten a kensington Mango tree to survice a wet melbourne winter out doors and I'm wondering if Canistel will be more difficult or easier in comparison.

The cold wont be any problem, since there is no cold in Melbourne, just lack of heat. Like Mango the real test will be if you are able to find enough heat to actually make it grow rather than end up a 20 year old bonsai that's grown about 6 inches :). If you were to plant it hard up against a brick wall facing North that might get you the extra night time heat you are going to need

My seedling, about 1 metre high and in the open, survived (no damage whatsoever)the coldest night we have had here for 63 years. There was a 5 millimetre thick layer of ice in a bucket of water that morning. The Abiu next to it never recovered. Both plants were in pots.
Temperatures get low here but rarely any frosts.

hmm. Sounds like it might be a dud. I've got limited space so I don't have that much room for experimentation.

John, I noticed on your my edibles page you have various varieties of white sapote and wampi growing. How are they doing in comparison to your canistel? because I'm growing all those varieties too and they seem to be doing great.

Yes no problems with any of them, all powering on beautifully. The Abiu doesn't like the cold at all, it took one night last winter at 0º to knock it flat. Luckily I have another one in a bonsai bag in the poly house doing well.

Hi rob, really late reply but no I didnt end up buying that canistel snd growing it in my garden. I have grown some lucuma which is very similar in taste to canistel. the one growing out in the garden is small but survives winter no problems and the ones in pots that i move under cover during winter are almost two feet tall. I tried canistel for the first time when I visited tropical fruit world in nsw a few months ago. Tasted like a sweet potata mashed with a pumpkin. Lucuma is similar but with a dash of maple syrup and drier flesh.

That sounds rather nice. In the meantime I've purchased a Ross Sapote so we shall see how that fares...and tastes.

I should add lucuma grows as far south as chile, so I am assuming its more cold tolerant and grows faster in less heat than a canistel. Melbourne winters dont damage then lucuma I have in the ground.
