Cherimoya at Last in Eden

This one is Pete's African Pride they are still quite small but on a good year they ripen to a fair fruit but not brilliant. We started pollinating these early December, but they appear to be self pollinating well.

This tree is a real cracker, Forbidden Fruits Variety Cherimoya, it never stopped growing or went dormant last season. It stared flowering late December and is still setting fruit without hand pollination now. Note the huge variety of fruit ages I am hopeing for an extended crop.

Pics of our best Cherimoya. Eden NSW is on the cost near Vic, a few of us are experimenting with Cherimoya. This tree is a seedling at my buddy Pete's house, we ordered it from Diggers about 5 years ago. This year it started flowering in early December, we hand pollination second week in December. It is now mid May, we have already picked a 818 gram fruit (in photo with Pete)it is yet to ripen. There are still about a dozen others on the tree, some big some smaller. It appears to be a big fruited early variety.

Hi Ally - yes I do know where Eden is - your Latitude is on a par with Horsham with the Coastal influence which is between Melb and Adelaides Latitude.

Is the Cherimoya in Pic 1 above out in open in full sun as it seems to me - must also be in a well drained spot or on a bit of a hill.Like to know how you got success with these in Eden. Havnt tasted a cherimoya yet as I can only get Atemoya fruit here in Melb.

The other question is what night minimums have you been getting of late?
Cheers Mark

Thanks Waterfall and Mark at the moment we are gettin down to about 7 degres C. In winter we somtimes get light frost about minus three minimum. The tree I think you are refering to is Pete's Cherimoya it is on a west facing hilside and gets regular liquid manure and has good drainage.

My trees dont have such good drainage in the soil, one I built up the soil into a large mound before planting.
there are places colder than mine growing cherimoya.

good luck with your annono growing i ally

We ate a cherimoya from Pete's tree. It had extremely delicious juicy flesh with a rather tangy flavour to it. I Love custard apple, this is my first cherimoya and I think it is much better than any custard apple I have ever tasted. Written by Jesse the kid on the back of the bike.

By the way Mark from Vic those mangos look great on your page.

Thanks for the info, I too have only ever eaten custard apple which I love and have growing but I have a cherimoya growing too and look forward to tasting the fruit one day.

I was actually thinking of buying either a custard apple or cherimoya for my father. He lives about 8km inland from Forster/Tuncurry and successfully grows large amounts of mango, avocado, citrus and macadamias.

Do you think a custard apple (atemoya) or cherimoya would be more suitable?

At that location I would say cherimoya would be more likely to thrive and would recomend it, but in a good warm spot if it is frost free atomoya should do okay.

Of consideration though is pollination, unless you are confident that your father will be into hand pollination every year. I would go for a variety with some self pollination ability, sophia does not have much of that ability on my propety and it appears nether do Pete's seedlings. I have seen fino cherimoya self pollinate in Tilba near here, they are supposed to have great flavour. Also forbidden fruits variety has good self pollination ability, they need to be ordered from Forbidden Fruits Nursury, their flavour in my opinion is very simlar to African Pride Atomoya (super market custurd apples), very sweet not much sour and that kind of lichorice undertone.

If you want the atomoya I think African pride has good self pollination ability but some say others have better flavour.

Thanks, the lychee are going in a garden bed which has a 2m tall clear polycarbonate wind break on the west and north sides and the garage to the south, basically a wind free sun trap.

The greenhouse is reserved for my soursop.

I was pleased to read about the attributes of Fina de jete as I am growing one here in Melbourne and was unsure of it's qualities.

It hasn't fruited yet but it's good to know that it has flavoursome fruit and is self-pollinating.

Nice little tree and spot, if that wall gets a good bit of sun it would get warm. Check out cherimoya taste test in google some people take it very seriously. Fina certainly has its fans and even if some say it is not number 1 of all cherimoya , they all say it tastes good .
