Cherimoya dormancy in Victoria

    14 responses

J starts with ...
Hi everyone, I had a question in regards to cherimoya dormancy in victoria. Last year I got a Southern knight cherimoya tree that lost it's leaves and went dormant (in the ground) at around October. Right now I have a few more potted Cherimoya trees (Fino Dejete and Sofia variaties) that I plan to put in the ground late september.

However two of the 4 Fino dejete Cherimoya have lost their leaves in the last two weeks (Middle of August). I'm not sure if this is due to normal dormancy, root rot or just because it's been really cold here in Melbourne. I don't see any new leaf buds forming either. The other two fino dejete seem fine and have not dropped any leaves. Out of the Sofia's 1 tree has dropped most of its leaves while the others have yellowing leaves.
Is it normal for Cherimoya to drop leaves and go dormant around this time of year in victoria? Or are my little trees in trouble? I have included some pics to look at. Any thoughts?

How long have you had those trees? were the leaves on them grown in your climate?, if not then that's normal.

Cherimoya's don't got dormant but they do loose all there leaves starting at this time of year as the new buds push the old leaves off, but as your trees aren't showing new growth? I think the leaves on the tree were just grown in another climate and that's normal for them to fall off

Best time to put them in the ground is the day you get them same with everything :), but now will do. I'd expect them to be pushing new buds before the end of October. You'll know when because the Cherimoyas you have in the ground will push their leaves off at the same time.

Most trees you buy from Daleys will drop their leaves either as soon as it's colder or warmer or more sunny than Northern NSW. the new leaves that grow in your own conditions will then be fine

Yeah J, they will be fine, even though they look dead it will put on the new growth as Jason said. Most of the new growth I got from mine started around November, the new leaves looked quite different from the initial ones that died back, somewhat more furrowed. Anyway once they have the new leaves they probably won't drop them all again in our climate. I only see a couple of leaves drop at a time to be replaced by a new one. Yeah and put them in the ground, no point in waiting and its the first day of spring officially!

btw still need to get you over here to have a looksee just been caught up lately, maybe when I get back from Taiwan in November. Its custard apple/soursop season when I get there too : )

Dave, I'm sure there is commercial Cherimoya production in the mountains of Taiwan. You might get lucky and find some seeds

Hey Nick it looks fine to me, by the way it's an Atemoya, Atemoya seedling maybe. You can tell by the narrow leaves. Should be interesting to see if you have the heat to grow that

Yes Daley's have only just started selling them. I bought a couple of Tropic Sun from a nursery in Sydney after contacting the growers in Rockhampton. While there I also bought a couple of Paxton Prolific. None have started loosing any leaves as yet, same with the African Pride, although the Pink's mammoth is bare.

Jason and Dave, thanks for the advice. I've put all my cherimoyas in the ground this weekend and have my fingers crossed that the two without leaves come back strong by november. 1 of them had an extremely weak looking root system, but having said that Every cherimoya I've put in the ground (including the southern knight) has had weak looking roots. Especially in comparison to say a white sapote!

David, you have my email. Let me know when you'd like to drop by.

I planted a 'white' cherimoya in Sydney in Feb this year purchased from Daleys. It lost its leaves a few months later, then has lost them all again - just as spring is coming on. Right now it looks dead and I was worried that it had died. Hopeful from reading this thread that it is in the process again of growing some new leaves though.

All my cherimoyas are leafless at present. Now is a good time to check for dead branches which snap off easily and do some pruning . When the new leaves come through they appreciate a spray of zinc sulphate, 1gram per litre.

I bought my fino about 6 weeks ago, it was just a long stick about 2m tall with a couple of leaves on the very top. I chopped it to about 1m high that day and it has new leaves pushing out now, about 2cm long at the moment.
