JohnMc1 starts with ... Anyone growing this? I sourced some seeds off EBay a few months ago and is now fruiting profusely. it's difficult to tell the difference between this and the closely related black nightshade (S. Nigrum) I think the Chichiquelite berry is a cultivar of S Nigrum. The fruit is larger and sweeter and the plants I have are much taller.

denise1 says... John your berries look good. Some seed suppliers have in the past given seeds of the Burbank "wonderberry" which is just an average quality Solanum nigrum that I wouldnt bother growing. They sold them as garden huckleberry The real G.H. is Solanum nigrum guineense and can be really tasty to most palates. It falls from favour when not prepared properly, as they must stay on the bush until it is no longer shiny black but dull. Then it must go through some kind of soaking, Check websites for exact details. They are then said to be greatly improved and similar to blueberry, cooked in a pie. I am waiting for my bush to bear. My plant looks similar to black nightshade but much bigger leaves so it seems I have the right one too. | About the Author denise1 auckland NZ 29th November 2014 9:09am #UserID: 6832 Posts: 688 View All denise1's Edible Fruit Trees |
