It can be a very large sprawling vine, each node can throw down a tap root and then reproduce a new base and run from there. The fruit can be heavy and numerous as well, about the size of an over-inflated NRL football. Better to let sprawl over the ground. Thanks for the link, I haven't found a practical use for the fruit.

I have just planted a couple of seeds of Cucurbita ficifolia in garden beds but I might need to move the seedlings as it seems that they are perennial. It looks like an amazing curcurbit with a lot of uses in many cultures on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucurbita_ficifolia

Does anyone know should it be on a trellis or is it better on the ground? Thanks

Thanks John.

Those Mediterranean and Latin American uses in baking look pretty good.

Have plenty of seeds if anyone wants to grow it, still in the fruit up the back paddock. No wildlife is touching it, has a tough rind, similar to gourd but not quite as thick..

I fixed a typo after I posted the first question, and the thread was strangely re-arranged by that.

Thanks for the seed offer John, I have half a packet left but someone else may want some. Good for the current weather.
