Alex starts with ... Hi there We have a chocolate sapoate bought from Daleys nursery that has been in the ground for 4 years now. It has grown beautifully to around 10 feet tall. Last year it flowered for the first time but none of the flowers turned to fruit. This year, the tree is filled with large buds and now flowers. Unfortunately, many of the flowers are turning brown and don't look like forming fruit ( see attached photos). The tree is well watered, there are bees everywhere and we have been feeding it. Any suggestions as to what we may be doing wrong for these flowers not to be truning to fruit??? There are still many, many buds which are yet to flower.

denise1 says... If you have room, I would recommend planting another grafted tree of a different variety. It could enhance fruit setting. Also it may well be Ok by itself but it is common for many trees to not set a crop the first year or two of flowering. I dont know if the choc sapote can tolerate fertiliser, but generally a fertiliser rich in potassium will enhance flowering and fruiting. | About the Author denise1 auckland NZ 16th December 2015 9:03am #UserID: 6832 Posts: 688 View All denise1's Edible Fruit Trees |
