Citrus disease - what do I do?

    4 responses

Hi, I have multiple citrus trees planted along a fence. However, particularly with my lemonade and lemons, the outside of the fruit has this dry scab/scale and the internal fruit quality is very poor - dried out, no juice, and discoloured. Can anyone tell me what this disease is, and what the best thing to do about it please?

I also have some issues with fruit fly striking - what is the best way to deal with this?

Thank you,
Marcel

How old are the trees? How much water do they get? What fertilisers do you use, how often? How much sun do they get? How long have they/you had this problem? How long has this fruit been on the tree before you picked it?

My guess is that you have simply left the fruit on the tree too long before picking it, and it is growing in full sun with extra heat reflected from the fence, with slightly too little water and not enough nutrients.

Thanks Manfred, the trees are approx 4-5 years old, I have very sandy soil, and have an irrigation system with a single irrigator (sprays around 1m diameter) which I run automatically 1hr/week. They are in full sun, the fruit isn't ripe yet, so hasn't stayed on the tree too long. I haven't fertilised the trees in the last year. So you think it's management/nutrition rather than a disease? Thank you

The reason I think it is management is that you specify "particularly the lemons and lemonade". Most other citrus fall off if they are left on too long, but lemonades go brown and dry inside. No experience with problems with lemons though.

Sometimes oranges and orange crosses will re-green instead of falling off and they will look unripe and be dry inside. Could this be the problem?

If Trikus had the energy, he could look it up in one of his books on plant problems to see if a disease related problem matches the symptoms. If not, I will confer further with him tomorrow PM and see what we can turn up.

Looks a bit like Citrus scab

I would image search that and see if its matches.
Fungal diseases often respond to direct treatment and also management, to prevent the conditions that favour the disease.
