Hi I was wondering if anyone knew if I should be pulling off the leaves off my Apricot trees and almond tree? The weather here in Perth has been a bit strange lately and they still have alot of leaves.

I wouldn't do it, 2. What would it achieve? You may find this article helpful:

The reason I was asking was because someone told me that trees that need chill hours to produce fruit do not start building up those chill hours until they have lost all there leaves. So I am not sure if this is correct as Ihave now heard this a couple of times and I am also not sure if almonds and apricots need chill hours.

John, deciduous trees lose leaves in respond to the temperatures: if your trees are keeping their leaves because of climatic conditions, stripping them of leaves won't fool them that they'd had their chill - it would be more like a goat coming along and eating all their leaves - what would that do? I'm no expert but I'd read up on that before acting on hearsay. (Sorry I'm not calling you a goat).

It is interesting that in a S>E>Asia country (thailand?) they grow 2 crops of apples each year. It is achieved by stripping off all the leaves after each crop. I dont know if they are a tropical variety or what.

Hi denise1, Here are a couple of books on that matter:

http://www.actahort.org/books/199/199_29.htm

Note that these trees are grown and trained to endure this regime and not normal trees. Also constant chemical sprays are used. What do you think they feed the trees-with-no-leaves with? What about the longevity of the trees and their value as trees other than fruit factory?

Hi this is a article from Peter Coppin where there is a small section that he talks about stripping the leaves off to build the chill hours.

Thanks for the link John. From what I've read on the subject, timing seems crucial and taking care with sprays is vital.
