Hello banana growers!

Was wondering if you de-bell your bunch of bananas? Do you do anything with the bell or just throw it back on the ground? I know some cultures cook and eat the bell - it looks too good to waste :)

Hi Happy Earth,
Yes, to help grow larger bananas, it pays to de-bell. Yes, you can use it in a stir-fry but it's hardly got any taste.

I just mulch my bells, but the wallabies always find 'em and eat 'em in no time. Then they fertilize the bananas with their droppings :-)

Hi Happy Earth,

This is one of the recipes developed and written by me in my own cook book to be published in the future.

Some people said that only certain type of banana bell can be eaten because of the bitterness of some varieries but if you soak them in vinegar water it should be OK. I have not tried all varieties but Edible fruits varieties.

Banana flower and chicken salad

Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 25 minutes

Banana flower has 2 parts:

Little bunches of bananas that will develop into bananas
Dark or light red coloured petals that cover those bunches

The young light coloured petals are used in this recipe, the rest will be discarded

Ingredients

12 petals of the banana flower
2 chicken breast fillets
1 carrot
1 table spoon of sugar
1 table spoon of vinegar
2 chicken fillets
1 tablespoon of fish sauce
