dragon fruit

I live in north ryde, sydney. I have over five year old dragon fruit plant which doesn't do much. Not even a single flower in all these years. It has full sun during mid day and partial sun most of other times. What am I doing wrong?

Problem could be not enough Sun. They need heaps of Sun to flower properly.

Mine initiate flowering around the summer solstice. By Christmas day the flower buds are noticeable. Mine are large established plants moved from a rundown abandoned Dragon fruit farm years ago. They took years to re-establish and start flowering again and are still producing more and more flowers every year. I still have one large plant that hasn't produced a single flower.
I don't think it's the light intensity, it's more the duration of light that sets off the flowering hormone because the species come from an understory environment. I'm going to experiment with a light source this year to extend the photo period to hopefully keep the flower hormones high in the vine and extend the flowering period. They like to be well watered in a well drained medium.

Maybe it's a heat and sunlight thing. Some of my plants started flowering on the 1st October but I'm a bit further north than you(bundaberg area), so that could be a factor as well.

You're right Anthony, you get more light and heat, goes to show once they get a certain amount of photons they move into flower mode. On the day after the summer solstice, I'm going to rig up a light and keep the photo period high. It'll be an interesting exercise

Sounds like an interesting project.I'm more looking toward crossing any early flowering varieties to hopefully promote that quality in newer varieties. So far I've only got 3 varieties that are flowering so that will be a starting point. Dragonfruit has an interesting future.
