Dwarf Apples - size

Hi everyone, I have just purchased a Cox's Orange Pippin, a Cripps Pink and a Dwarf Granny Smith. I am about to plant them into some half wine barrels and put them along the back fence. I am wondering however if that's possible as my patio is quite close to the fence. There's a bit of space there but if they get too tall it could prove rather difficult. My question is then, how short can you keep the trees? If I keep pruning them will they stay around 2m? I know the Cripps and Pippin can get to 3m but I don't want them that tall. Should have checked the height before I started the project oops!! Any advice would be much appreciated I am much the newbie when it comes to fruit trees :)

I'm surprised you could even buy a Cox's Pippin in Perth. We really don't get enough chill hours, not even in the hills.

Not familiar with Cripps, but the Granny Smith should do well if you are in a cool are.

it depends on the apple rootstock. the common semi-dwarf apple rootstock is M26, and that's 3m ish. But seeing you are putting them into pots, their size would be limited anyway.

Apple fruit on old wood (at least 1 year old) and some are tip bearing - so if you need to keep pruning, you are potentially cutting off future fruit.

Yes, they can stay around 2m.

Good luck. As a consideration, you should also look at espaliering. :)
