would it be a good idea to line the bottom of a 35cm terracotta pot with small pebble stones to improve drainage for dwarf fruit trees?

Stones will make it pretty heavy, and the pot is already terracotta.

If I want drainage, I use broken bits of styrofoam packaging. Very light, and it never seems to break down.

Edit: But maybe that didn't really answer your question?

Hi Julie
Thanks for your reply.
It did partially.
Weight is not a problem as i will be using a trolley to move them.
I have since read on the net that pebbles in the base are a definite NO! No! as they actually increase moisture retention & cause problems.
Regards
Brian

Yea, I think I remember Don Burke saying it was no longer a good idea. I have to say, I gave up doing it myself - not deliberately, just forgot! Plants seem to be doing OK.
