It means you will most likely require another apple variety to have apple fruits. Apple pollens are quite complex topic - not all apple pollens are equal, and it is best to follow recommendation.

The order of flowering for my low chill apples are firstly Tropic Sweet, then Dorsett Golden, lastly Tropical Anna - so best pollination by DG. I have other apples, but they flower much later so not good as x-pollinators. I have found my Tropic Sweet to be partially self pollinating,(it sets the odd flowers out of season, and some grow to size), so this variety may be an option for you.

OK, I'll try answer all your Q's. Having the bee hives is great, as will certainly aid with pollination. However, some types of fruit trees have pollen that is self sterile meaning that it cannot fertilize flowers of the same variety. Most apple trees fall into this category, hence the need for two or more varieties. The three varieties I named will fruit in Brissie. The better pollinator for Trop.Anna would be Dorsett Golden as there's a longer overlap of flowering, but Trop.sweet would probably be OK. Taste may help selection but is subjective, but if you like a very sweet but tangy apple, TS is better. If you like the taste of Golden Delicious, DG is the way to go as it taste almost the same. All three varieties can be bought in dwarf form.

How did you get on with your pollinator apple tree Avril. I have an Anna and a Tropical Sweet

Also I am curious where you got hold of your native bees from as I am thinking of getting hold of a hive myself

Where are you in Brisbane? :)
