David says... I'm not familiar with Early Gold, but being a cooler area I'd tend to be choosing mid season variety as you don't want flowering to be coinciding with cooler weather. Irwin is a dwarfish variety which is high yielding and its fruit ripening period is comparatively fast so that there is time for a new flush of foliage before the cooler weather sets in. Another one to look at is Glenn, which is supposed to be hardy, but not dwarf. I wouldn't necessarily worry about having a dwarf as being a cooler area , excessive vigour shouldn't be a problem.
