Feijoa Identification

    3 responses

Hi Folks
I am seeking a Feijoa expert for some tricky questions.

1. Is the Feijoa plant or fruit dangerous to browsing animals (especially Alpacas) if they get past my fences and eat something?
2. How can I identify my trees by variety? I have only just bought the place. Is there something I can look for?
3. How long does it take a Feijoa to grow to 4 m high in Maleny climate and soil?

Thank you to anyone who can assist with this information.

Cheers
Ian

Hi Jason
Thanks for that. That is encouraging as we do not want to lose any of our Alpaca family. Not that they are escape artists.

Does anyone have any advice re the issue of identification of the varieties?

Are they seedlings or grafted? Seedlings will be variable; grafted ones should be identifiable, but not quite as distinguishable as apples for example. There are general fruit shapes and sizes for different varieties, although this can be a little variable with climate, soil, moisture, nutrients etc. There's actually a Feijoa farm pretty close to you - it may be worth while contacting/visiting them. Try http://hinterlandfeijoas.com.au/
