I am wanting to grow a feijoa tree just for the fruit. Is there a particular variety I should get and do i need to cross pollinate? How do i do this?

Look out for Mammoth and Triumph, the two most commonly available feijoas. You will get some fruit off most isolated trees but much more with a pollinator nearby.

Edith, are both Mammoth and triumph varieties pollinators? As in can I have two mammoths close by and increase fruiting, or do I require two different varieties like Triumph and mammoth together?

Yes two plants with different names will do - but these are the best match most likely if you can find them. Two seedling trees will also do ok but your fruit may be inferior/small. Just don't have cuttings from the same plant which is what two Mammoth trees would be (as they all originate from the same single tree).

Thanks edith. It's finding Mammoths and triumphs thats the kicker. Nobody has them around my part of town. Every Feijoa tree at local nurseries seems to be unlabeled when in comes to variety.

Try a google search as well, you might be able to get some small trees sent by mail order. Daleys has a few named varieties and plantsqueensland.com has Mammoth available.

Plantsqueensland it is! I'd order them for daleys but they don't have mammoth or Triumph in stock. My mammoth has been found.. now to find the triumph.

Might be an idea to contact Daleys for their ideas on pollination - I'd hazard a guess that their other named varieties would be suitable pollinators for your Mammoth, being from different original mother trees. I've always found them helpful and they return e-mails or you can phone them.

Will do. Called Plantsqueensland, and they advised me the mammoth listed on their website wasn't really a mammoth variety, just a normal feijoa or Feijoa sellowiana. He wasn't aware of it being a mammoth. Hmm.

The search continues!!
