Fence coverage

    3 responses

Hi everyone,

I'm planning on constructing a trellis/espalier setup (posts/wires etc) to run in front of a north facing side fence at my home.

The goal is to grow some trees, plants, or vines along this fenceline that I can grow to 2.5m tall (fence is 2m tall) so that we have some privacy from the neighbours.

I'm after suggestions on what I could plant that would suit my needs. Something preferably evergreen and dense enough to give us privacy.

cheers
Pete

Do you have a site photo? How far are you from foundations/pavement? What is ths soil/rainfall like? Are you looking for something that fruits or just any suitable plant, how about flowers and perfume? I'm sure some of the guys here will be able to help find the perfect plant with a little more info.

echinopora this is the fence in question.

There's no problems with soil or rainfall. Being so close to the pool I'd prefer something that either doesn't flower heavily or doesn't flower at all.

I came across Leightons Green conifers while looking online, they seem like a good option. Fast growing and dense.

If you just need coverage then you are golden. Flowers and fruit tend to demand more than foliage. Have you tried plantthis.com.au ? Leightons gets real big, might be a bit if work keeping them a reasonable size without having the roots knock over your retaining wall and blocking the neighbors winter sun. There are a bunch of bushy conifers that are a little less vigorous. That would be my only advice seeing the space. There is not much room there so think about what the roots will do and what kind of maintenance there will be when mature. Our neighbor planted what they intended to be a fast growing hedge, which once mature meant constant pruning.
