Fig pruning (forum)

Pat Richards starts with ...
I have a small fig tree (it was labelled dwarf when bought). It grew to about 4feet high and 2 metres around over the last 8-9 years. It has produced hordes of delicious fruit in that time. I have never pruned it. Last year it sprouted two branches which have grown upwards to about 2.5 metres and doesn't seem to be budding as much fruit this year. Should I chop off these branches (or prune the whole tree).

Figs can be severely pruned without ill effect. Prune it with an open centre to allow the sun to penetrate the tree. Avoid heavy winter pruning as this will result in the loss of the crop the following year, it is better to prune after it finishes fruiting.
