Fig tree beetles

    8 responses

Attica starts with ...
I have just moved into a new place and very excited to see a fig tree laiden with fruit, now all of a sudden overnight beetles have attacked and have chewed the outer layer of skin on all most every piece of fruit. White oil? Garlic chilli spray? Or pick off the hundreds of beetles?

Before you use Derris (rotenone) read up about it. The active ingredient is implicated in neurological diseases which to me does not preclude its use but I'd be doubly cautious.

Derris vines with toxic roots grow widely including in near tidal areas of nth australia.A butterfly that has caterpillars on it is free from bird predation.Native peoples have used the roots as a fish stunner in many places and it interfers with 02 absorption. Stunned fish rinsed with freshwater survive apparently unaffected.Rotenone is about the only registered fish poison and govt agencies routinely use vast amounts to rid confined waters of pest fish prior to restocking. It has also ben used in NQ streams on tilapia. It denatures very quickly, is assumed to have no ill effects from secondary poisoning of predators and scavengers and is considered to be human 'friendly' in normally used concentrations.I would still always be cautious with any poison used and read its NRA profile.

Derris is solidly linked to Parkinsons disease and is no longer sold in USA or Canada.

John I found the specific study you are referring to and indeed those employed to apply paraquat and rotenone were found to be 2.5x more likely to develop Parkinsons. While there may have been extremely high levels of exposure compared to that of garden use and formulations, your point is accepted.

Appreciate the new tone in our posts and I'll reciprocate. As for rotenone those tasked with phasing out various insecticides rely on a body of evidence rather than a single study. Generally best to defer to them as they would be qualified in toxicology and would give far more time to weighing the evidence than we would. If rotenone is banned in the USA that's important info.

It seems the body of evidence appeared thin until the study mentioned. The misuse by fishermen has been an issue that is likely to have contributed to moves to restrict rotenone also.
