Fruit Tree Thieves

I moved to Tasmania from QLD last September and our 6 acre property has lots of fruit trees, mostly apple but also quince, pear and plum. Last season, just when the fruit was nearly but not quite ripe, we woke up one morning to discover it had all disappeared. I had seen fruit with bites out of it or dropped on the ground before that, but this time not a single piece was left..... not even a stalk! Can anyone let me know what animal would have taken it and if there's any way to prevent it from happening again. I don't like the idea of bird netting as I'd hate to injure wildlife.

My suggestion is fruit bats.
They have the ability to strip a crop overnight the night before the fruit is finally ripe

I dont think fruit bats have managed the Trans Tasman crossing as yet Slicko - all Tassys little bats eat insects as far as I can see and weigh less than an ounce.

It could be the previous owner who still thinks they are their fruit?

My suggestion is put up motion sensor camera to catch in the act. Aldi have them during the year for sale.

Thanks everyone, I could be possums I guess but wouldn't they leave at least some droppings behind?
We'd plenty of fruit bats in QLD, but nope not down here..... yet - they'd have a feast! My mum in law is now saying Cockatoos??
A motion camera is not a bad idea, would it pick up at night time? Haven't seen an Aldi in Tassie either :).
I'm very new to growing anything, so it's all learning :)
