My Asian Pear tree split down the middle during a nasty storm. Can I save it by binding the two halves back together?

It may well work but it could happen all over again, unless the sail area is trimmed back.

Thanks.. it's 15 years old and never lost even a branch before. This was a really crazy storm...scared the bejesus out of me! It's heavy with pears right now. I may have to thin them to reduce the weight.

Should I paint the raw parts with something?
