Zebu starts with ... Hello:) When a child living in Rabaul, New Britain we would collect the local Garlup Nuts never seen in Queensland to date. It is a hard shelled nut much like the Macadamia but resembles a Pecan shell shape. The kernel is segmented, white in colour and firm but otherwise of soft texture and very tasty. The tree is huge, of domed dark green leaves grown in the open resembling a large common mango from a distance. Once, in the 1970's I saw several in assorted unshelled nuts in Rockhampton but did not keep and strike any, thinking they were now commercially available but they did not remain on the market. Rabaul was originally a German settlement with coconut and rubber plantations established by the Germans and it is possible they strategically planted the Garlup Nut trees around the town; because in the 1950's the trees we harvested off were very large seeming to be some 40 to 50 years of age then. Can anyone enlighten me to their availability as seedlings as I'd like to establish one.
