Gnarly looking carrots

    4 responses

Hi all,

I planted carrots last winter and rather than growing nice and straight they grew in gnarly shapes. Can anyone tells me what the cause would be and how to stop it?

Thanks,

Failed Carrot Grower!

Carrots follow organic matter in the soil. Plant them in sandy soil without any compost, or plant them in soil with shaped manure blobs to the shape of the carrot you want.

Ordinary carrot growers use the first method, and prize carrot growers go for the other. Experiment.

Thanks Manfred. I planted them in apparently good quality potting mix. Someone said there might be some kind of nematodes?

Gnarly and nematody are two different things. There may well be nematodes, and nematodes feeding on nematodes, but to affect the root you will need to be able to see soft rotten bits where the culprit nematodes are feeding. A root won't "heal" after a feeding attack. Have a look with a magnifying glass- you often don't need a microscope to see nematodes- just for interest. Remember, lots of nematodes are harmless and some are benign.

But grown in organic matter, carrots will surely be gnarly. The nematodes are innocent!

Potting mix not good for carrots - too chunky - they grow best in fine loam soils - (with no rocks or clay chunks)- get a metal stake and make a cone in your soil and put in a mix of fine compost and loam with some sheep manure for ferts - put a couple seeds on top - I did this for oyster veg and had the best straight roots ever and tasted pretty good also.
