Grapes not filling out.

Can somone help me with this? For some years now I only get partly full bunches - the rest is little dried-up bits.

I have been told they don't rely on bees for pollination, so what else could it be? I think they are muscat -small, round fruit, very sweet when ripe. It is a very old vine (maybe 30 years old) and produces enormous quantities of fruit.

Hi Julie - I have two muscats - one purple and one white (right next to each other, treated same etc). The white one does this a bit too - but not the purple at all. I was thinking of thinning the bunches either by chopping them in half - or reducing overall bunches? Maybe they will produce a better crop with less..?
My vines are fed, mulched, manured etc.. and irrigated also - so I don't think it's a nutritional thing (especially as the purple so good).
That's about all I can think of, anyway..?

Thanks amanda. It's possibly a nutritional thing, as you say. I have to admit it gets no care at all, apart from lots of mulch - being so old it doesn't need irrigation.

It started off OK when I moved in. I don't think it got much care from previous owner - he was in his 80's with Alzheimers and didn't seem to know much about gardening. I was wondering if it was a trace element deficiency?

I Googled 'unfilled grape bunches' and got one reference. It said cool spring weather might have this effect.

Well, we definitely had that! No plums and very few apricots. Because the grapes are so much later, I didn't think this would affect them. Still not sure that's what it is.
