Most flowers have also great benefit in providing for and attracting beneficial insects butterflies etc. For example plant tansyleaf= phacelia tanacetifolia to encourage hoverflies. Blue flowers are said to benefit bees. Your garden will be more complete and balanced. Remember to avoid flowers that will potentially invade the environment. There are very nice native flowers to choose from

Just love the flowers, I grow lots of them, they fill in those blank spaces and just look great. I like the old types like Zinnias, Marigold and petunias. Recently I'm trying some salvia in the mix.
I'm very keen to see my Beehive ginger come into flower as well, don't know much about them but the plant didn't die down over winter and has picked up where it stopped over winter and is going gangbusters.

Like John Mc I have some different around my garden. They are tough and have striking colours but can also be 'eaten', at least the flowers can be sucked of their nectar.
My kids call them honeysuckle and do the rounds each day, especially my 5 y.o..
They are really easy to propagate from cuttings too, so can be amassed easily.

vict they are my orange and white abutilons; I also have a pink one. They are very easy to strike; mine all came from my friend's garden.

They taste like flowers LOL - the petals are quite mild in flavour, the nectar like honey; the orange ones have thicker petals and the texture is not unlike lettuce.
