guys,
living in Launceston and am really keen to give it a try at growing these fruit and others from further north. Lonie is no where near as cold as it was 15 years ago and am looking at buying a north facing property with extensive terracing in the south of the block, very protected from southern winds. block only about 700sm, but am going to clean out a lot of existing plants to grow fruit and veg. can i get hold of these fruits and similar from you guys and bring them into Tassie???

Greeve, I think you'll find that all plants and seeds are prohibited from being sent to Tasmania (Like WA as well).

There are a couple of nurseries that can arrange the paperwork to do it but they will charge extra for it. In any case it will be difficult to grow fruit trees like Mangos there as they are hard enough in Melbourne, although a few people here have managed to get some to fruit.

It's not worth it. You dont spend 10 years and waste a good planting hole for four sub average fruit worth about 50 cents each. Just to be a realist:).

Plant something that will feed you properly. Dragon fruit isn't going to happen either.

Well, yeah. I wasn't going to say anything, but the chances of growing mango or hylocereus in Tassie succesfully are extremely remote unless you have a particularly swish heated greenhouse of some description. This isn't to say it can't be done-- on another forum I participate in there's a member who plans to grow mangosteen in Iceland, and she will do it too having the training to build a sufficient artificial environment.

Well Jason the economics arnt there but fun value is - Im trying now a couple different varieties now for the fun value and possibly a greater result - like a Palmer mango and a nam doc mai - Thai eggplants grow thru winter here extremely well such as a pea eggplant that didnt suffer from the sub zero temps recently and the NDM wasnt fussed by winter nor the Honey Gold mango which they are growing commercially in Mildura that gets colder than here -

I grafted an ederanol (to save this plant on bad rootstock) and a lamb hass and pushing rootstocks using Parafilm last weekend -

I got a box of 12 half inch Parafilm rolls from USA couple weeks ago and is far superior to normal plastic tape - no knotting needed too - all my plum grafts pushing now - I have six left if anyone is interested

guys thanks for the feedback, positive and otherwise all valued. where I am now I have lemons, kaffir, Tahitian and west Indian limes growing like legends, I have struck avocado's from seed and have 5 growing, the largest being 4 metres tall and it has fruited for the last 3 years, have also given away about a dozen avocado's all doing well. north facing, raised beds protected from the south/south east, we have also managed oranges 3 types, grapefruit and mandarins and 3 years ago we had a crack at bananas, a bit hard but had a hand this year as well as this we have passion fruit and jacaranda going like bombs. so thought maybe just for the hell of it and a laugh we could try Mango's and dragon fruit. Tassie really isn't that cold guys. hear what you say about Tassie being a no send fruit to state but what about from seed???? anyway thanks for the feedback anymore would love to hear.

Geeve - did you see the hint if you get Mangos in your fruit markets there - try that Honey Gold and dehusk and plant a couple for a seedling - looks like a good plant to me so far - will take you a few years but you seem to have our patience so good growing - I left some pics of mine on a mango forum here 5 months ago - cant seem to find it but will take a pic tomoz and put here - too dark now - I find the biggest problem not to be the cold but reduced daylight hours over winter - if you can use grow lights somehow could improve your reults

Symiot - I got 8 plants out of 2 seeds and kept the 4 best one - 2 strong growing well a 2 lesser - they really handle the cold very well and will plant the best one in a couple weeks in a raised bed - supposed to be a KP with superior qualities like annual bearing and tolerant of Anthracnose and Black spot - lets hope so

Mark, did you mean you did not protect it over the winter? Not even put it under veranda, for example?

I have 5 X 30yd rolls left of 1/2 inch parafilm -- thats 90ft long so one roll will last a long time as it stretches more than double - you have to stretch it to make it adhere to itself - Thithi may be going to BAAG vegie swap in Sept
