Help saving my damaged Banana tree

    8 responses

Tiara starts with ...
Hi all,
I need some urgent advice for saving my damaged banana tree. As can been seen from the photos the tree is severely damaged thanks to my dog, I didn't realized she's been peeling off the trunk for a couple of weeks.
The winter is approaching, will this tree survive ?
What should I do ? any advice please.
Thanks
Tiara

it's still OK, just tidy it up the best you can or cut it off and let it reshoot. If you cut it down you will
probably get more than one come up. Bananas grow from the inside out.

Best best it to cut it off at the base and let it reshoot, as John says if you do this there's a high chance you'll get another sucker. They grow pretty fast.

They stop growing around 13°C but it's the freezing temps that will do harm and I can't see you getting freezing temps where you are.

Hi Tiara, have a bit of a scratch around the tree trunk, it 'should' already have a sucker or two growing close by. I couldn't see any in Pic 1 & 4, but they may be still beneath the soil.
Might pay to put some chicken wire around it, to stop the dog :-)

I cut mine off about 300mm above the ground, gouge out the middle of the trunk and add a t-spoon of kerosine, that stops it growing.

Did you find any suckers? I'm sure they would be there.

I wouldn't cut it off just yet, do the chicken wire first :-)
