Improved Sugar Apples

    30 responses

Annona squamosa is found in tropical areas all over the world and in Australia we have the common green and a red that is probably not quite as good as the green.
There are a few around the world that are improved types with texture, taste, size and flesh yield that are superior.
Red Chewy, golden, mexican giant and big eyes are some of the notable types.
In the pictures are golden and the biggest gun of all 'big eyes'.

My Sugar Apple seedling from East Java is throwing out some flower buds. I'm very interested to try the fruit when it happens. This is it's third year from planting the seed. The seed was compliments of Fruitist from Brisbane.

Some fruit has set this year after four years from seed, not bad for this climate. This seed was apparently originally sourced from East Java. I'm keen to see what A. Squamosa variety I have.

Hi John - are they pollinating alone or with your help? I cant seem to get it right with my PM and PP :( Do you have any Cherimoyas - do they always look a bit soft and limpish in their leaves? I had my Sophia on a wall facing east and think it was getting too hot for it so put it into my Avo protected area for a while over summer.
I cant wait either to see if your seedlings fruit gets as big as those earlier pics - well done.

I hand pollinated as the opportunity of male and female flowers were open at the same time. I have the new giant variety but I've only got one successful germination so far.
This East Java variety has lived it's whole existence in a pot in the hothouse.

All i have is a pp and i can say i have had about 3 fruits in 2 years without any intervention or polination on my part. So i can at least say its partial self polinating. But lots of flower drop without fruit form.

The poster formerly known as... says...
At maturity they self set heavily. I hand pollinate mine, so it bears as heavily as I think it can handle. Though mine set 3 fruit while still in its original pot before going in the ground.

Annona fertilizing question - can you tell say within a day if hand pollination was successful?
For instance - do the leaves stay at female stage if successful and they then dry up? I dont seem to have enough flowers in both stages so collect pollen and anthers for the next day and conserve in the fridge in a cut down black 35mm film container - any ideas?

Perfect technique Mark. You will see the ovary starting to swell as the male flower petals shrivel. It will be very pronounced within a week of a successful pollination.

Thanks JohnMc - Hope I get at least one or 2 to pollinate - have you ever tried grafting Cherimoya - im experimentin on 2 branches of my Sofia - one with greener but firm scion wood on a new greener but firm branch and older hard scion wood on and older branch using whip and toungue - using a parafilm wrap on complete scion like I do on Avos - which do you think has a greater chance of taking?

I've never tried the green method but it's suppose to be quite successful. Just grafted a llama, (A. diversifolia) onto Cherimoya which is doing very well.

Looks like it's time to pick my largish sugar apple I grew from seed. It's still rock hard, but as long as there is separation and cream colouration between the sepals, which there is, all should be good.

When you mentioned the giant one are you talking about sugar apples or cherimoya.

5th of Jan you mentioned you were growing somthing giant from seed, I was wondering if it is this new giant hybrid cherimoya called Rosa that has sparked my interest or another giant Annona. As a child in PNG I remember the custard apples being quite small but very tasty, I guess they were probably sugar apples. The bullocks hearts, were particularly lovely as well I love those sour big prickly fruits, they may have been sour sops.Have you thought of playing hybridisation games with your sugar apples and your A.reticulata.

Hi Ally, just went back through the thread looking for the word "giant" but couldn't see it. Anyway, the fruit I'm holding and about to pick is a large sugar apple, A.Squamosa. The sugar apples I saw in Indo were not much larger than golf balls, mine fills my hand completely, it's as large as a softball/baseball.

I might have been referring to some giant Cherimoya (fruit)seeds I was sent. They are fast growers and I've personally experienced variability within the hybrid species. I've fruited seedlings from an inedible seedling fruit and they turned out to be nothing like the mother plant, so I'm not being overly excited with the outcome, I'd prefer to be surprised.

Ive also had some mixed suprises with seedling Annon's lately two diggers seedling one sets decent fruit and the other refuses to set even with hand pollination.

These giant cherimoya seedling might be hit and miss, but that is what happens when people can import seeds but not scions, we all grow seedlings until someone gets a good one then then scion swap. I keep reading about these great get togeathers for fruit tree growers and scion swaps in the US but never in Austraila. Do you know of any such meets in Ausrtalia or is this forum and Australia post it for us.

Never heard about get togethers to swap scion wood. While we are on Annonas I was pleased to see I have 2 A.paludosa seeds that have sprouted and my red genova ilama had a flower but it fell off.I had 2 Annona crassifloras that turned out to be Garcinia gardneriana as identified a few days ago.I hope some of these plants pull their weight.

This one was from seed Fruitist sent me a few years ago, they came from E. Java. There will probably be a heap of seeds available if anyone is interested. I've taken some very late scions from this tree and grafted them onto A. atemoya and A. cherimoya, basically anything I had lying around. The cold might beat them at min of 11- 12°C this week, although temps will pick up before winter sets in.

Yep, this one is definitely a keeper. Beautiful smooth, no graininess, perfect refreshing flavour, just love it. Not as sweet as my Forbidden Fruits Cherimoya, which can be overly sweet. Seeds number the same as a typical Cherimoya, around 40.
Might try a few late green grafts onto some cherimoya seedlings while the weather is favourable.

I might have an A. Reticulata, not sure till it sets flowers and fruit. I thought it was an A.Diversifolia, but on another forum there is some very keen Annona growers that put me straight, then Mike T drops a bombshell and tells me it could be something altogether different. It's a real mystery bag, I can't wait for it to send out a flower..
