Can anyone suggest a tree (preferably a fruit tree) for a large interior space in Melbourne?
So far i've had success with Chocolate Sapote but i'm looking for a mature specimen and its difficult to find mature Sapotes.
Cheers

You could try a carambola, especially one with a long style flower that doesn't need a pollenator- such as KARY.

Hi - I would like to see how your black sapote has gone? (can you post photos) Mines (Mossman)outside 2mt in pot and set quite a few fruit this year - Coffee plant with beans and flowers would look good too with its coppery foliage - or if you have height what about an Avocado in large pot with fruit on it - quite a talking point too? I have Lamb Hass 3mt tall in 100lt bag with fruit if interested - Mark

Hi Mark
interested to read your success with both Black Sapote and Avocados to get fruit in Melbourne as I've never been able to grow either ones here and never seen any Avocado trees in Melbourne with fruit on them.

The nursery nearby was selling Black Sapotes but all of their stock died last winter so I'm a bit surprised by your results. I was thinking of getting the Maher Dwarf variety so I could grow it in a pot or do you think the Mossman would be a better choice?

Did the Lamb Haas also have fruit in the pot? Cheers!

Hi Linton - my Lamb Hass - well i got 4 of them out of 6 from a special birdwood order - Dec 2012 - one in ground in raised bed (no fruit) going well (see pics on my page - and 3 others now in 100lt Bags - one with one second with 2 fruit and third with about 15 left already bigger than store Hass - Have a Mossman Black Sapote in 500mm pot about 4th summer (get thru winter quite easily) now set more fruit as got a Bernicker last year with a few fruit now set and growing well - also my KP mango has 2 fruit left growing well (also in 500mm pot) - has about a 5inch trunk on it - I know of an Avocado in Springvale possibly a seedling that is Hass like with lots on it and my Fuerte in my old flats in Richmond fairly loaded this year too - have you ever seen the growquest videos on Youtube with lots of fruit in pots? can contact me on mbarcus23ATgmailDOTcom

Linton, there's are a bulk ton of fruiting Avocados in Melbourne. You can see them just walking around the suburbs, I've seen them myself and I've hardly ever been in Melbourne. Melbourne is a huge place (and a very warm place) and I'd bet there's thousands if not tens of thousands of fruiting Avocados there, most of them would be old seedlings.

I even see fruiting seedlings in country Victoria from time to time with tiny populations. The Avocados are around, you just been to keep your eyes open, you'll see them.

Hi Jason -
Maybe we should create a Map? I live here and know of at least 6 reasonable Avo producers - but of the Avos sold in Melbourne to novices and no real knowledge of drainage especially in a clay area I reckon as a guess 90% - 95%
of Avos sold here dont get past year 2 in the ground - the exceptions are Me in Richmond - LOL - which is a heavy soil with drainage - The other is 5-10km from ocean east bayside along Golf coarse and Market Garden Sandy loam corridor around the sand belt golf coarses where mulch improvement would make a good tree and maybe no frost also as close to Bay - I hear of greeks around oakleigh raising seedlings and I know of one that doesnt fruit at all and is about 20years old - Im going to help graft a seedling to improve an old guys Bacon that has no pollinator but only has 15 or so avos self pollinated and about 4.5mt tall -
Mark
PS - Most would be in back yards so you would never see them -I know of only one hass seedling out back that produces the rest are in front yards

There are a number of large trees growing around Springvale and Dandenong which I pass nearly every day but have never noticed fruit on them. I will have another look - are they likely to be fruiting at this time?

My main problem with trying to grow Avocados in the ground is that they get burned in Summer and die, even the trunks get burned black. The sand where I am is not capable of holding any water or nutrients for long so I figure the only way to grow them is in pots.

Linton if they are typical fuerte type seedlings as most older trees would be it's not easy to see the fruit but yes anything that is fruiting will have (small) fruit on it right now.

I hear you on the sunburn, it's not easy to get them to the age where they can tolerate extreme Melbourne summer days.

Some tolerate sunlight better than others. From what I've seen Bacon is basically immune to sunburn as is Ettinger. Also Ryan. Fuerte burns moderately so does Hass, Gwen burns a little less than Hass. Hass isn't that bad itself but Reed is noticeably better with sunlight than Hass. Sharwil is the most sensitive I have, it burns extremely badly. Wurtz seems to do pretty good in the Sun. You know now that I get a mental picture in my mind the trees with the more red new growth would be the most sun tolerant and that makes sense.

Sharwil is a failure in Victoria on multiple levels. Its a type b, It doesn't fruit (never set one for me), burns really easily. Only good thing about it is it grows really fast.

Most varieties won't burn once the bark has gone thick and matured. Bit while they are green you need to keep the sun off.

I'll take some photos during the week. The Sapotes have grown quite slowly as it is a low-light situation.
Other successes have been Coffee, Blueberry and Strawberry Guava.
Avvo and Carambola are good suggestions, i'll give them a crack, thanks.
