My avocado tree is (apparently) about 30 years old and starting to look sick. The leaves are turning yellow and brown and some of the branches are incredibly bare. I actually live in Spain (so it is winter but the tree has never looked like this before)and can't find any help here, but our climate is very similar to WA and thought that maybe someone might know what it needs. Please help!

Elanem, I'm not sure but it looks like your tree has suffered a harsh summer and maybe excess fertilisation. Avocados are very sensitive to the sodium and chlorides from fertilisers. Also, close-up in the first picture, on the left hand side, you might have to check for mites. Poor little thing is very stressed isn't it?
Theres also a lot of bark damage where a grub can get in and might explain all the branch die-off. Check all the junctions where the branches meet the trunk. Prune all the dead and dying areas and burn the prunings.
I just use goat manure around my avocados. This last year, one of my trees suddenly looked extremely sick and lost most of its leaves in a week. It was one little grub at the junction of some branches. I saved the tree and it's looking good now, but it floored me how fast a tree can go down.
I hope you can save your tree Elanem. It's sad to see a friend go along with its history.
