JELLY PALM: Your quantity, date of last fruit, etc?

    15 responses

health101orgarticles1 starts with ...
April 8 2015: Last fruit of the year. Just one fruit that day. 1103 total this year. 4 bunches, but one bunch had none or almost none. About +1500 in 2014.
Great tasting and healthy sweet fruit.
Unlike those much more acidic Jelly Palms growing in other places eg on nature strips etc.

I'm going to try and end this post deleting business. If I do that, I'll need mods. Any volunteers?

I must have missed something. Butia Capitata or jelly palm or wine palm has sweet smelling edible fruit and will take freezing temperatures. Good for the Melbourne-ites. The fruit is fermented and turned the resulting wort into a wine. Never tried it myself, but, it's a beautiful ornamental palm if for nothing else.

I have. There was a gigantic one on the property where my family would kept their horses (they loved them).

Fruit ranges from ok to yick. You have to get them at optimal ripeness, which is no easy feat on a big tree; when they drop, they are over ripe.

They must vary a lot, because the one I have tastes OK but is too fibrous to eat. I made jelly with it once that was quite nice.

Yes, well-- the problem as it stands is that anyone can arbitrarily delete anyone's post for any reason, legitimate or otherwise. Generally the case seems to be that most post deleting is done out of spite.

I have never seen any other forum, having modded and created a few myself, in which members have the power to delete others member's posts.

It is insane.

Going to try and change this.

I have complained of this before, but it still continues. I made the same point as Yoda - no other forum enables you to delete someone elses post. It encourages spite.

A lot of forums have a 'spam' report, so the moderator can delete inappropriate posts

I'll talk to Correy and try to get this changed, but that will almost certainly mean moderators.

Would anyone like to be a mod?

BJ and John, you're on here reasonably regularly. I'm looking at you. I don't have the blood pressure to mod another forum.

What does it involve? How much time would be needed do you think?

There would need to be agreed rules on what could be deleted. A couple of forums I am on don't allow rudeness or political comments.

'If the Forum Rules as they stand were adhered to by members, rather than enforced by moderators, that would solve a lot of issues.'

Jackfruit, if my grandmother had testicles, she'd be my grandfather.

The main problem with this site (there are many) is that it lacks an off-topic section. This is the traditional method of relegating contentious and/or heated topics to an area where the non-involved don't have to deal with it, and it keeps the bad stuff out of the main boards.

It's not easy to be a mod. You've got to know what constitutes slander and character assassination and how this differs from the usual heated adult banter. You don't want the forum turning into a vitriol festival, but you don't want to turn it into a kindergarten either.

Anyway, I've spoken to correy this morning and I don't think he has time to think about any of this right now. Daleys are flat chat at the moment.
