Kiwi Quandary

I purchased two Kiwi plants (M & F) in the Spring a year ago. The both sprouted well and grew well that year. This spring, they woke up and sprouted new leaves when something ate 6" from the base and up for all vines on both plants.

They resprouted new vines and are doing well.

When I first saw the animal damage, I removed the severed vines and rooted them. I tagged them as from being from Plant A or Plant B but do not know the gender. Out of six cuttings, three of them are growing well but in the process may have messed up the labels.

Before I plant all three and have to wait for maturity to know which is might be male or which might be female, I would like to know of there is a way to determine gender before they flower?

I peeked under the leaves but cannot tell. (:

I do not believe there is any way easy way of telling gender before flowering, there are however differences between varieties, for instance sweetie male is much hairier than sweetie female. If you new the variety of male and female it might help. If you plant them all, kiwi are easy to graft and the roots of extra males could still be useful.

As I am discovering, apparently the male grows faster and has leaves much more colorful. I now have two plants 15' apart and one is growing faster than the other. Too early to see any difference in the leaves.
