Kumquat dropping leaves

    7 responses

Marcus starts with ...
Hello everyone,

My kumquat has been dropping leaves,
and i am at a loss over the reasons for it. I have sprayed fungicide and insecticide on it and it seems to have reduced the amount of dropped leaves. I also found and killed a few small caterpillars.

I have attached some photos of the plant. If anyone could help me with my problem, that would be great ! Thank you.

Looks pretty healthy to me. The potting mix looks a little dry but maybe it's only on the surface. There are new shoots; I like to spray with white oil (500ml water to 5 ml vegetable oil and a drop of detergent; shake well) on both sides of leaves and stems. It would deter scales and aphids and leaf miners.

Looks like fertiliser burn initially with spray damage from the fungicide.

Yes, Marcus you have a small tree there and it's been subjected to a lot of treatment. I think that all it needs now is regular watering and a watchful eye as long as it gets enough sun. It is also carrying fruit (which I wouldn't eat if you've been spraying insecticide at it) so it's using energy to carry them.

Thanks a lot for everyone's replies. The amount of dropped leaves has been reduced. I will give it plenty of sun, and water fertilise it once a week.

Marcus I don't think you need to fertilise it every week even if you use the weakest solution. At best most of it will wash out of the pot and at worst poison your tree.

Force feeding a dwarf tree every week won't make it grow any quicker.
Slow release or composted chix manure pellets monthly should be adequate.
