Leyland Cypress

    1 responses

We're planning a privacy hedge, and decided on Leyland cypress, the compact "hedgeworthy" variety. Then I read these shrubs emit a chemical from their roots that will kill other plants within 6-8 feet. My plan was to have these in the back of a perennial border, with flowers right up beside them. But since then I've looked at several other websites that say nothing about this. I don't want something that will kill my flowers. Have you ever heard of this problem? (I am in PA)

Thanks,
Sheri Snyder

Leyland can be very unpopular with neighbours, as nothing grows near them.

Try Pittosporum 'Shademaster', which is very attractive and fast growing. My son planted a few for privacy and they grew quite fast.
